136. [Errin’s Story] The Power of Asking for Help

Hours of cardio, food restriction, seeing the number on the scale drop only to have it bounce back up month after month.

Sound familiar?

This is the cycle most of us find ourselves in when we decide we want to lose weight and Gone for Good graduate, Errin, was no exception.

It’s not a lack of effort or knowledge that keeps you stuck.

But it could well be your lack of support.

Errin came to EA Coaching after years of trying to lose weight on her own, but “doing everything backwards,” as she said.

She considered just giving up and accepting that she could never be successful at losing weight but then decided to ask for help instead.

Errin is joining me today on the podcast to share the lessons she’s learned from walking the walk. I know her story will inspire you to ask for the help you need in this – or any – area of your life.

Taking Compassionate Ownership

I know how frustrating it is to feel like you know all the right things to do, and you may even be doing some of them, but you’re still not reaching your goals.

Learning to take compassionate ownership can help you take a more objective look at the steps you’re taking towards your goals. While it may feel like you’re doing all the right things, when you zoom out and really look at your actions, you might find that what you thought was 95% effort is actually more like 75%.

With compassionate ownership you can look at those areas you are falling short in and take the appropriate steps to course correct.

In Errin’s case, this looked like being willing to ask for help and realizing that there are times she needs to give herself grace while also being held accountable.

Developing compassionate ownership is key to long-term sustainable success.

It Doesn't Have to Be All-or-Nothing

Most people who set out to lose weight will fall victim to the all-or-nothing mentality at one point or another in the process.

Deciding that the whole day is a wash if you overdid it on calories at breakfast or trying to participate in #nodaysoff while running yourself into the ground is one of the quickest ways to burn out and abandoning your goals.

It is possible that in the beginning you will need to be a little more strict in how you handle your nutrition and exercise just to help create and cement those new habits, but that doesn’t mean you will be living that way forever.

You have the power to make the best choices for your life and your goals at each stage to prevent being overwhelmed by the idea that you have to be “on” all day every day to see progress.

Next Steps

If you’re waiting fo the perfect time to get started on your weight loss goals, there’s something you should know – there is no such thing as the perfect time.

Whether it’s weight loss, or any other goal, you will always be able to come up with a reason you should put it off.

Continuing to delay taking action towards reaching your goals isn’t helpful so it’s time to take that leap and do it while:

  • you’re busy with kids
  • work is crazy
  • before that big trip you have planned

The sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll reach that goal that seems so far out of reach right now.
