Ep. 313 Finding Your Style – At Any Size or Budget with Gayla Bentley

Do you ever open your closet and feel like none of it feels quite right anymore?

Maybe your body has changed. Maybe your work-from-home wardrobe has taken over. Maybe you just don’t know what your style even is these days.

You’re not alone.

Many women—especially those juggling careers, families, and constantly shifting priorities—find themselves in a style rut. You don’t want to spend a ton of time (or money) on clothes, but you also want to look like you’ve got it together. You want to feel confident, not confused, when you get dressed.

So how do you make that happen?

Stylist and style educator Gayla Bentley has worked with thousands of women over the years to help them rediscover their style—regardless of size, shape, age, or budget. Here are some of the top takeaways from her advice:

Your Style Should Reflect Who You Are Now

One of the biggest reasons women feel disconnected from their wardrobes is that our closets are full of clothes that reflect an older version of ourselves—pre-baby, pre-pandemic, pre-career shift.

Gayla encourages women to dress for the person they are today, not the person they were five or ten years ago. That means letting go of clothes that no longer fit your life (or body), and making space for pieces that feel aligned with how you want to show up right now.

You Don’t Need a Whole New Wardrobe

Contrary to what fashion influencers and makeover shows might imply, finding your style doesn’t mean buying all new clothes.

Gayla recommends starting with what you already have and asking:

  • Does this fit and flatter me today?

  • Do I feel confident in it?

  • Does it align with how I want to feel when I wear it?

Even just creating a few intentional outfits you can rely on for specific situations—like an important meeting, a date night, or an event—can take so much stress out of getting dressed.

Style Is a Skill, Not a Talent

You don’t have to be “naturally stylish” to have great style.

Gayla believes that style is something you can learn—just like cooking or budgeting. It’s about getting clear on what makes you feel good and learning a few core principles that help you express that visually.

She also emphasizes that everyone deserves to feel stylish, no matter their size, budget, or stage of life.

Shop With a Strategy, Not Out of Stress

Impulse shopping is tempting—especially when you’re frustrated and feel like nothing fits. But Gayla recommends taking a more strategic approach.

Instead of trying to overhaul everything, get clear on what you actually need. Maybe it’s just one blazer that pulls outfits together. Or a couple of tops in your best colors. Or pants that actually fit and feel good.

Focus on filling the gaps with intention, not emotion. And if you’re shopping on a budget, that clarity becomes even more powerful.

Build a Wardrobe That Works for You

Your closet doesn’t need to be huge. It just needs to work.

Gayla is a fan of creating mini-capsules—small groups of clothes that mix and match easily, support your lifestyle, and make it easy to get dressed without stress.

Whether you’re heading to the office, the school drop-off line, or a weekend dinner with friends, having a few go-to outfits that you feel good in can make a huge difference in how you show up.

Whether you’re rebuilding your wardrobe from scratch or just trying to elevate your everyday outfits, style doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right mindset and a few simple strategies, you can feel confident in your clothes—without waiting for the “perfect” body or spending a fortune.

You deserve to feel like yourself in your clothes. Right now. Just as you are.
