Ep. 379 The 4 Ps of You with Trunnis Goggins

Trunnis developed the 4 Ps after a series of life-changing experiences. He had followed a traditional path of military service, education, and career success but realized he was advancing on “autopilot,” doing what he was supposed to do rather than what truly mattered to him. The turning point came after the tragic loss of his daughter, which pushed him to reevaluate everything. At 48, he walked away from his established career to rebuild his life with intention, guided by the framework that became the 4 Ps of You.

Purpose: Defining What Really Matters

Purpose begins with the question: “Who am I and what am I supposed to be doing?” Trunnis emphasizes that this is about meaning, not money. Chasing wealth or status without deeper purpose often leads to emptiness. Purpose gives direction to your choices and helps you prioritize what’s most important.

Planning: Living With Intention

Planning means refusing to wing it or live passively. It’s about taking deliberate steps toward your goals. Trunnis encourages starting with honest self-discovery and then using tools like a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) to create an executable, realistic plan. Importantly, plans should be flexible and reviewed regularly. As he puts it, treat your plan like a guidebook, not the Constitution—adapt it as life changes.

Practical steps for planning include:

  • Spend time in self-reflection to clarify your values and priorities

  • Complete a SWOT analysis to assess where you are right now

  • Write down your plan in specific, actionable steps

  • Regularly review what’s working and what isn’t, then adjust

Passion: Fuel for the Journey

Passion is the personal connection that makes your goals meaningful. As Trunnis explains, “The goals you chase must connect back to you.” Passion provides the energy that makes persistence possible. Your job doesn’t necessarily need to be your passion, but the goals you pursue should reflect what you truly care about rather than what others expect of you.

Persistence: Building Strength Through Challenges

Persistence is about expecting obstacles and choosing to keep going anyway. Trunnis describes it as a skill you build by reconnecting to your passion and your end goal in the face of setbacks. Patience is a big part of persistence, especially for goals like health or weight loss that require steady effort over time. He shares personal examples, such as quitting smoking when his daughter was born, to show how anchoring persistence to a deeper purpose makes it more sustainable.

Ways to strengthen persistence:

  • Remind yourself regularly of your end goal

  • Reconnect to your passion when motivation dips

  • Accept that setbacks are part of the process

  • Practice patience—progress may be slow but still meaningful

Putting the 4 Ps Together

Each P reinforces the others: purpose sets the direction, planning creates the path, passion provides energy, and persistence keeps you moving forward. Together, they create a framework for growth that applies to every area of life—health, career, and personal development alike.

The 4 Ps of You isn’t just a motivational idea; it’s a practical manual for decision-making. By using these four principles, you can stop living on autopilot and start intentionally creating the life you want.
