80. How to Finish What You’ve Started

In This Episode

If you just can’t figure out how to finish what you’ve started, you’re not alone.

From half-complete crafts to meticulously-planned-but-ditched-one-week-in workout plans, to diets, most of us are much better at starting than we are at finishing.

In our second book review episode, I’m sharing with you lessons from Finish: Give Yourself The Gift Of Done by Jon Acuff so that you can start following through and actually reaching your goals.

In the book, Acuff talks about various stages of setting and achieving goals, how perfectionism holds you back and how to stop giving up in the middle of things.

He talks a lot about how the middle part of any goal can feel the hardest, and I talk about this all the time, too!

It’s that time when you’ve come pretty far, but there’s still a whole lot more to do to get where you ultimately want to be.  In our 1:1 coaching program, we call it “The Grind” and there’s a whole module about it!

I also really loved the way he talks about how people who are chronic starters want the harder, more  complicated version, and people who finish things try to make it easy and simple.

This is basically the premise of this entire podcast – focusing on just the “big rocks” so that you stick with it long enough that it works.

I’m sharing more of my biggest takeaways from the book and how you can use them to stay motivated, work through the fears that come up as you get closer to your goal and how to change your identity to someone who follows through.

And, of course, I recommend you read the book for yourself, too.

You’ll Learn:

  • Why the majority of resolutions fail
  • Signs of perfectionism (the enemy of progress)
  • Actionable tips to increase your chances of reaching your goal
  • Different types of motivation – and how to use them to your advantage)
  • The secret rules that are holding you back
  • The value of collecting the right data as part of your process (and why you might be resisting it)
